In 1972, driven by a need for a quality stump grinder but lacking the time to wait, John Bowling, Rayco's founder, built his first stump cutter. News of John's remarkable stump cutter quickly spread, and it wasn't long until fellow tree care workers were asking him to build a stump cutter for them too. In 1978, Rayco was officially in business. The company was named in tribute to John Bowling's father, Ray. In 1981, Rayco's first factory opened to begin work on an extended line of stump cutter models. By 1986, the company introduced the first self-propelled stump cutter. These self-propelled stump grinders enter the market with the power of a tow-behind but narrow enough to pass through a garden gate. The RG1620 Jr revolutionized the stump cutter industry. Morbark, LLC acquired Rayco Manufacturing in 2017, expanding production and the availability of Rayco stump cutters, forestry mulchers, and articulated wheel loaders through the company's worldwide, authorized dealer network.
